Naimah Begum | Protein Purification Scientist | Peak Proteins

Peak Proteins Welcomes Naimah Begum

Peak Proteins welcomes Naimah Begum who joins us as a Protein Scientist.

Naimah has just recently graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc in microbiology, thoroughly enjoying the aspects of bacteriology and infection. Through numerous reports she became fascinated by the human microbiota and how bacteria directly influence our health and wellbeing. Naimah was adamant that she wanted to pursue a career in microbiology.

That all changed when she secured and completed a 3-month internship at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology as a research assistant. Through her internship, Naimah successfully expressed numerous fungal enzymes in a range of expression hosts and gained experience in using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI TOF – MS) to analyse purified proteins. The satisfaction and excitement from transforming a gene sequence on a word document into a physical functioning enzyme drove a passion in protein production and a determination to pursue a career working in a laboratory where she can use her skills within protein expression and purification.

“The thing that I look forward to the most in Peak Proteins, as a protein scientist, is working alongside specialist scientists and learning how to master and apply different purification techniques in an industrial setting. Going from working in research to industry is a challenge I am eager to take on,” commented Naimah.

Mark Abbott Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Peak Proteins added, “There is no doubt that these past few months have been hard for us all.  As a business we continue to grow and that affords us the opportunity to employ some of the young scientific talent that is certainly out there.  It is great to have several very high quality universities across the north of England that certainly helps in our recruitment. The whole team look forward to working with Naimah and the other young people we are employing and training the next generation of cell and protein scientists.”

A habit that has kept with Naimah since university is keeping up to date with scientific issues and she enjoys reading the latest reviews and publications. Weekends are usually taken up by cycling and hiking within the Peak District. As a keen foodie, Naimah loves trying different foods from around the world and spends a lot of free time recreating or trying out new recipes.
