Margaret Veldman-Jones – Our “Artist-in-Residence”
Margaret Veldman-Jones has worked for Peak Proteins for 3 years as a Cell Culture Scientist. Her three passions have always been science, art, and sport, becoming a national heptathlete and long jump champion.
Joining AstraZeneca after graduating, having completed a years’ work experience at Alderley Park, Margaret pursued a career in science becoming an expert in cell culture therapies, therapeutic antibody, and biomarker development.
Margaret commented, “When I was made redundant from AstraZeneca in 2017, I saw this as an opportunity to rekindle my passion in art. I took a one-year foundation course in art and design at Trafford College as a refresher, set up my own studio at home and began to accept commissions from family and friends”.
“It has been absolutely brilliant and the greatest compliment I can have is for someone to hang one of my works of art on their wall,” added Margaret.
Margaret recently exhibited in London, for the second year running at the Sketch for Survival collection of original artworks featuring endangered species and at-risk wild spaces. The artworks are auctioned off to raise funds for frontline conservation projects. Some of the artwork was shown at COP26 this year.
Creating artwork on a wide variety of subjects, Margaret’s commissions have ranged from pets to animals to people and soft toys.
As seasonal project, Margaret has created 4 winter animal pieces and printed them as Christmas cards. All profits will go to a local animal charity.
“I’m very glad I took the time to set up my studio. I am also very glad to have the opportunity to return to science with Peak Proteins. Working part-time gives me the time I need to practice my passion for art”.
Peak Proteins has commissioned Margaret to create a piece of art to hang on a wall of the new home in Tytherington. “A great opportunity for me to mix art and science!”
