Dr Mark Elvin Swims the 30.9K Swimathon Challenge

Dr Mark Elvin swam 330.9K Swimathon0.9K, the latest Swimathon Challenge, this September.  The Swimathon 2021 officially took place on between Friday 10th and Sunday 12th  September at over 300 venues across the UK. There are 5 individual challenges and 2 team challenges.  The 30.9K is the pinnacle Swimathon challenge. It combines every single one of the regular, set individual and team distances, 9 swims in total. The 30.9K challenge could be swum over the period ranging from Friday 3rd to Sunday 19th September.

Mark commented, “I started swimming again in 2015 regularly going to the Manchester Aquatics Centre early before work.  I sustained a knee injury while playing football and ended up with cycling or swimming as my only exercise options.  I remember my first time at the Aquatics Centre swimming only 10 lengths!!.  Since moving to Peak Proteins I regularly swim 4 – 5 miles a week down at Wilmslow Leisure Centre”.

Although open water is an option, Mark completes all his swimming challenges in a swimming pool.  “It has been a much more difficult challenge over the past 18 months with the pandemic.  Firstly with pools being closed.  There has been time restrictions in terms of how long you can spend in the pool but everyone is very understanding when you’re raising money for charity”.

So far Mark has completed 1 individual 2.5K, 3 individual 5K and a triple 5K Swimathon since 2016.  Last year he came 31st out of 139 participants of the Ultra Marathon 25K Marathon Swims 2020. Earlier this summer he also completed the Swim44, raising funds for Diabetes UK.  44 miles is the distance of the English Channel to France and back again!  The Swimathon raises funds for Marie Curie and Cancer Research UK as well as the Swimathon Foundation.

“Cancer and diabetes have both impacted close relatives of mine, so all these charities are very close to my heart”.  Mark added, “I love swimming.  We have turned it into a real family event not just a great exercise programme for me.  I’ve raised well over £1000 and am looking forward to my next swimming challenge in 2022 whatever that is!”.
